Local SEO: ranking first for "trade + city"

Four levers drive local SEO, and only one lives on your website. Here is the order to tackle them to rank first in your city.

Local SEO: ranking first for "trade + city"

Local SEO rests on four levers: your Google Business Profile, a dedicated page for each city you cover, a steady flow of customer reviews, and mentions of your business on other websites. Only one of those levers lives on your own website. That is why so many companies with a beautiful site remain invisible in their own city.

Understanding what Google shows locally

Type "plumber Lyon" and look at the page. Three distinct zones share the screen, and they follow different rules.

ZoneWhat appears thereWhat drives it
Paid adsThe first three blocks, marked "Sponsored"An advertising budget
Map and three businessesThe block with the map and ratingsYour Google listing, reviews, proximity
Organic resultsThe classic list belowYour website and its content

The map block captures most of the calls. It barely depends on your website: it depends on your business listing. That is where to start.

1. The business listing, your priority

It is free and takes an hour to complete. Ranking in the map block depends on three factors: the distance between the searcher and you, how complete the listing is, and the volume of recent reviews.

  • Exact primary category, not an approximation. It outweighs everything else.
  • Service area filled in if you travel, precise address if customers come to you.
  • Opening hours kept current, public holidays included.
  • Real photos added every month: team, premises, jobs, finished work.
  • Description written around your services and your city.
  • Weekly posts, even short ones.

2. One page per city, not a "areas we cover" page

The classic mistake is a single page listing forty towns. Google sees one page, which ranks for none of them.

The right approach needs a real page per city, with content specific to each one: districts, local economic characteristics, examples of work, response times from your base. That is the logic we apply to our own pages, such as web agency Lyon or web agency Bordeaux.

The trap to avoid: duplicating the same text and changing only the city name. Google detects this and downgrades every page involved. Plan at least one paragraph genuinely specific to each city.

3. Customer reviews, the most underused lever

Reviews count twice: in your ranking within the map block, and in the decision of a searcher comparing three businesses. A professional rated 4.8 across forty reviews beats a competitor rated 5 across three.

What works: asking for the review while the customer is happy, right after the job, with a direct link sent by message. What does not work: waiting, or emailing a week later.

Reply to every review, bad ones included. A measured reply to a negative review reassures more than a page with no criticism at all.

4. Citations, your details elsewhere on the web

Google cross-checks your information on other websites to confirm you really exist. Name, address and phone number must be strictly identical everywhere: professional directories, federations, trade bodies, partner websites, social media.

An address written differently from one place to another weakens the signal. Check this before adding new listings, then grow through local link building.

What order to work in

Complete the business listing1 hour2 to 4 weeks
Set up the review request2 hours1 to 2 months
Create the city pages1 day per batch2 to 4 months
Harmonise citations3 hours3 to 6 months

What to measure

Three figures are enough. Calls and direction requests from your listing, which Google reports directly. Your positions on "trade + city" for each town targeted. The number of enquiries received through the website each month.

If you cover several towns, we create and write those pages as part of our SEO services. You can also read why a website does not appear on Google if yours stays invisible despite these actions.
